Texas Hold’em Rules and Strategy

If you have not heard about Texas Hold'em you must have not been near a television on the past year. Celebrities are playing for their favorite charities in global broadcasts of this once, minor league poker game. Texas Hold’em has turned into a true a poker phenomenon.

Now, before you fly to Vegas and enter a high-stakes Texas Hold’em tournament, we need to cover some of the basics of the game. Sit back. Relax. We are going to take you through this game and at the end of this article you will know enough to sit down and play Texas Hold’em with confidence. Before we get to that, if you are just starting out - best to start with limit games. There is structure and it makes a safe place to start your study of Texas. Let's get to the basics...

The game is very simple to play but very hard to master. This makes is a great game for new players as well as experienced players. It is all starts with each player receiving two card and then five additional cards are dealt to the "community". The community cards are dealt face-up on the table so all the players can see the cards. Each player makes the best possible hand with their two cards and the five cards that are dealt face-up on the the table - the community cards.

When you begin a new hand, two bets are posted. The first player to the left of the dealer posts a bet. The next player, to their left, posts a bet. The remaining players do not bet at all. The deal travels around the table to each player participates in the posts as the deal is circulated around the table.

Each player is dealt two cards face down. The player to the immediate left of the dealer receiving the first card and the dealer getting the last card. The first round starts with the player to the left opening their bet or folding. The bet proceeds clock-wise around the table.

Once the first round of betting is finalized, the dealer produces three more cards and places them face-up on the table for all to see - the Flop. This adds three more cards to the community. These cards can be used by all the players. The best circle the table once again, the player to left of the dealer going first.

Once the Flop has been completed the dealer "Turns" the fourth card face-up in the middle of the table. Once again, the bets proceed around the table. The first bet is placed with the player to the immediate left of the dealer and then proceeding around the table.

Once the betting is conclude for the Turn the dealer exposed the final and fifth card and displays it face-up for all the players to see - the River. This is the final round of betting and as before with the other rounds the betting begins with the player to the immediate left of the dealer.

The showdown is the round that determines the winner. Each player makes the best hand they can with their cards and the five community cards on the table. Now it is very rare, but it has been known to happen that the five cards on the table can be the best hand on the table. When this does happen the pot is split among all the players.
